All about neck hernia symptoms and treatment!

Health News

At the desk, he spends many hours in front of his computer; If you are not doing sports or genetically weak muscles, you are in the risk group for un Neck Hernia spor. The neck hernia, which can occur as a result of hours of inactivity and working against the computer, affects the quality of life of many people. However, new methods in brain and nerve surgery help to improve the quality of life by shortening the diagnosis and treatment processes. The experts from the Department of Brain and Nerve Surgery of the Memorial Health Group gave information about cervical hernia that could lead to walking difficulties.

What is Neck Hernia?

The spine has to carry out the movement function in addition to counteracting the body weight and external forces acting in the vertical direction. It must therefore have two conflicting features, such as being stationary and moving. This dual feature is provided by the partitioned structure of the spine and the disks between the vertebrae. The discs absorb the forces applied in the vertical direction, side bending and rotation. Man’s stance on two legs increases the forces reflected on the disc. As a result, the discs between the vertebrae wear out with age. Load absorption capabilities and endurance are reduced, herniation may develop. Although the neck does not carry much weight, it has a high risk of disc herniation and disc herniation. Each vertebrae in the neck region, spreading the cola and the back on the nerves in the nerves originating from the body, provides sensation and movement of these regions. Cervical herniation of the disc tissue between the vertebrae occurs when the inner part of the gelatin tears into the spinal cord and nerves by tearing the outer part of a stronger connective tissue.

Symptoms of Neck Hernia

Neck hernia, spinal cord and nerve roots that affect, most often in the 30- 40s of life disease. Symptoms of cervical disc hernia changes depending on the duration and severity of the hernia. The most common neck hernia symptoms are as follows;

  • One-sided, pain-spreading pain,
  • Spread to the tips of the fingers and pain associated with numbness.
  • Loss of strength in the arm in which the pain is spread.
  • Lowering the objects
  • Difficulty and imbalance in walking

Neck hernia, acute and chronic can be divided into two periods. In acute period: the case of nucleus pulposus herniation or free outbreak, there is a picture of cervical spondylosis in chronic period with the formation of beakings (osteophytes) or generalized spinal degeneration of structures forming the spine system. Acute neck disc herniations; One-sided, shoulder blade, chest pain can be felt at the upper extremity. Pain may increase with coughing, straining and sneezing.

If pain and drowsiness are frequent and there is no bed rest within a certain period of time, a brain and nerve surgeon should be consulted.

Causes of neck hernia

Although the formation of neck hernia is due to many reasons, the neck is more delicate than the waist. Mainly looking at the same point, keeping the neck in the same spot for a long time, spending a long time in front of the computer or television, exposure to cold air conditioning temperature and not exercising are the main causes of hernia.

Neck hernia may also occur in some people due to structural features. Generally, in people with thin, delicate and long neck, neck hernia is more common in people with short neck. These types of people are weaker in muscle structures and are more easily affected by environmental factors and lifestyle. If the neck is used badly, they are at a higher risk of neck hernia. The incidence of neck hernia is much lower in people with short neck and flat head.

Cigarette smoking is also among the reasons that increase the risk of neck hernia. Especially in young ages, the structure of neck, the structure of the neck is deteriorated in a very short time. Cigarette smoking, lung cancer usually causes a long period of 20 years, while smokers in the first 5 years in cases of neck hernia. Genetic factors are also effective on neck hernia. If there are cases of neck hernia in the family of a person, the risk of hernia is increasing.

Improper working and sleeping positions provide the basis for the formation of the neck hernia. Fallen asleep is an important aspect of neck hernia. A neck pillow is required for people with this type of familiarity. Since at least 6-8 hours of sleep in the night is spent, orthopedic pillows that support the neck and fill the neck cavity should be used. The time spent in an incorrect sleeping position increases the risk of contracting the neck hernia.

Risk factors for neck hernia;

  • Work in occupations such as traffic accident, trauma, driver, banking,
  • Wrong movements of the neck and wrong positions,
  • Weakness of neck muscles,
  • Wrong posture, psychological stress, fatigue
  • Long-term computer use
  • Non-professional massage
  • Housework, sewing embroidery, cleaning, curtain hanging, wiping activities are the factors that increase neck pain. Therefore, the incidence of neck pain is higher in women.

Diagnosis of neck hernia

The detailed history of the patient and the physical examination are very important in the diagnosis of neck hernia and it is even possible to diagnose them. However, it is necessary to confirm the presence of neck hernia with its imaging techniques and to determine its level. A detailed neurological examination, appropriate radiological examinations, and neural electrospinning (EMG), if necessary, are sufficient to establish a definitive diagnosis in neck hernia.

If there is no evidence of nerve damage, absolute bed rest, pain relief and physical therapy are recommended. However, surgery is performed in the presence of signs of nerve injury and in cases where other treatment methods fail.

Treatment of neck hernia

Treatment of neck hernia, if the disease is mild, rest, stress-free life, pain medication and physical therapy is done with. However, if neck and arm pains do not pass despite medication and physical therapy, the patient may need to be treated surgically if there is numbness in the arms of the patients and there is a lack of force. Currently, neck hernia surgery can be performed more successfully. It is possible to treat neck hernia with microsurgery method, which can lose sleep and decrease quality of life. The microsurgical method tries to eliminate the existing complaints, and to raise the quality of life that has fallen due to pain and pain.
